In 2016, a thematic research group of the French academic Association of Human Resource Management (AGRH) was established to promote research in the field of Management and Spirituality, . Friday, June 28th and Saturday, June 29th 2019 the University Paul-Valéry – Montpellier 3 with the support of the AGRH, is organizing a two-day research colloquium on the theme « Spirituality, Development, Transformation » at the University Paul-Valéry – Montpellier 3.

Spirituality is an attractor bringing academics and professionals in search of meaning to rethink their perspectives and productions. Workplace Spirituality is considered « the recognition that people have an inner life that nourishes and is nourished by meaningful work that takes place in a context of community… » (Ashmos & Duchon, 2000: 137). Spirituality is a relational ideopraxis centered on a spiritual presence that unifies; enables to find harmony through the integration of the different aspects of oneself; orients by allowing to create meaning, to find one’s place, what one is called to in life; and to connect with ultimate concerns, values and meaning (Tackney & al. 2017); mobilizes all aspects of life thus enabling self-realization, one’s aspirations and potential, with intensity and joy (Duyck & al 2017).

Literature has steadily developed in this area (Cash & Gray, 2000; Giacalone & Jurkiewicz, 2003; Giacalone & Jurkiewicz, 2004; Karakas, 2009; Benefiel & al., 2014; Tischler & Al, 2007) showing that Spirituality is likely to influence areas as diverse as consumer behavior and experience (Moal-Ulvoas, 2014; Poulain & al., 2013), to increase well-being at work and performance in business (Duyck & Mhenaoui, 2013) and to inspire new forms of leadership (Pauchant, 2005; Voynnet Fourboul, 2012; Plane, 2015). The scope of literature on Workplace Spirituality covers different aspects of management research: organizational theory, leadership, human resources management, marketing, ethics and governance.

In this context, we invite you to work comprehensively as well as critically on the question of personal and organizational development and transformation in management situations. How can the consideration of « spirituality management » in processes promote the development and transformation of individuals and organizations, and/or conversely constitute a limit or even an impediment to this dual transformation? In today’s world, questions on individuals’ and organizations’ development as well as their transformation call for a number of questions.

The Montpellier colloquium invites researchers and professionals to invest this theme from a theoretical, experiential or practical angle, without limiting themselves to the following questions:

– To what extent and in what ways can a spiritual path influence individuals’ development? How to identify and track progress? What are the different possible steps towards a form of personal flourishing? How to apprehend the notion of time in such a process?

– What triggers spirituality (operating in various disciplines: philosophy, religion, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy), manifested at the individual or organizational levels?

– What are the spiritual needs of an individual at each stage of his/her spiritual development? How to respond to these, according on whether s/he is considered as a consumer, an associate or a leader?

– How can the consideration of consumers’ or employees’ spiritual needs help marketing or management express their societal dimensions and engage with them?

– What contemporary managerial practices are mobilized within organizations (mindfulness, meditation …)? What effects do these generate in terms of development and transformation? Are their foundations actually rooted in spirituality? Do they invite consumers, employees, leaders or organizations to transform themselves?

– How can consumption and work create meaning and how can we identify the periods of a consumer’s or an employee’s life conducive to the quest for meaning and spiritual engagement?

– How and to what extent does the context of hypermodernity influence different spiritual approaches? How do they reflect on organizational management? What could be the impact of spiritual leadership on the human dimension of organizations? To what extent would spiritual development of individuals and organizational development be compatible?

– How can spirituality influence the creativity of individuals, teams and organizations?

– What are (and will be) the impact and effects of artificial intelligence on spirituality management?

– Does, and will, the development of « transhumanism » challenge different approaches to spirituality?

– Are there risks or potential impostures resulting from lack of incarnation that spirituality enables to overcome?

– Spirituality and prospective: what about the person of the future?

Communication project and intentions submission standards for management research

 

The communication intentions must include the name(s) of the author(s), their institutional affiliation and the coordinates of the corresponding author, a title, 4 or 5 key words, a summary of 2000 characters including spaces specifying the subject, the problematic, the theoretical framework, the adopted methodology, the outline of some expected results as well as the selective references in support of the communication project. Papers should be original and not submitted to another symposium or be reviewed by a journal.

The symposium or poster format can be selected for professionals.
